The Academy of Dramatic Art of the University of Zagreb is the oldest higher education institution in the field of performing and audiovisual arts in the Republic of Croatia. Throughout its 75-year history, it has gained a unique place in artistic education and culture through its tradition and significance, making it recognized both nationally and internationally. The Academy's history dates back to the idea of establishing an acting school in Zagreb, which existed as early as the 1840s. This history extends to 1896, when the Croatian Dramatic School was founded, which is considered the pedagogical and artistic predecessor of today's Academy of Dramatic Art. Since its formal establishment as a higher education institution in 1950, the Academy has undergone numerous organizational and structural changes and is now one of the three artistic components of the University of Zagreb. The Academy is the leading higher education institution in Croatia in the fields of theater, film, and dance. The pedagogical and artistic activities of its teachers and students during their studies – and especially those of young artists after graduation – directly shape the national cultural identity. This unique position and role are both a privilege and a great responsibility – toward students, higher education, and the national cultural sector.
Beyond its core mission of artistic higher education, the Academy is dedicated to preserving cultural heritage, enriching social diversity through the creation of new artistic works and values, and promoting young artists who contribute to the development and legacy of Croatian and European culture. This mission is driven by a strong belief in the importance of fostering the sustainability and development of dramatic, dance, and audiovisual arts. The Academy achieves this through an integration of education, creation, and research, cultivating an environment that encourages the comprehensive development of student artists. For these reasons, the Academy’s work should represent and uphold standards of excellence in higher artistic education, thereby contributing to the sustainable development of dramatic, dance, and audiovisual arts in contemporary society.

Gender equality is one of the fundamental principles of the European Union and is recognized in the Constitution of the Republic of Croatia as one of the highest values of the country’s constitutional order. In Croatian legislation, the concept of gender equality is further elaborated in the Gender Equality Act (NN 82/08, 69/17), which prohibits both direct and indirect discrimination based on gender, sexual orientation, marital, and family status. This law also mandates that educational institutions implement gender equality training programs for their staff. As a result, educational institutions are required to promote non-discriminatory knowledge about women and men, work towards eliminating gender inequality and stereotypes in education at all levels, and integrate gender perspectives into all educational fields. The Gender Equality Act also allows for the introduction of special measures aimed at eliminating existing inequalities. These measures are temporary and serve to achieve substantive equality between women and men, without being considered discriminatory.
Gender equality strategies include obligations and actions aimed at promoting gender equality through structural change, striving to transform organizational processes, cultures, and structures in the fields of research and innovation to reduce gender inequalities. These strategies must be inclusive and responsive to diverse gender identities. In accordance with the constitutional and legal values of the Republic of Croatia and the European Union, the Academy of Dramatic Art has adopted its Gender Equality Strategy for 2023–2028. This strategy ensures equal opportunities for all genders in all areas of the educational process and fosters a culture of gender equality within the institution. The strategy defines goals, activities, responsible bodies or individuals for implementation, and timelines for achieving these objectives and activities.
The Academy of Dramatic Art has developed a quality assurance system, incorporating both formal and informal implementation methods. Alongside the continuous development and adaptation of this system, the Academy fosters a culture of quality, which involves the acceptance and implementation of quality standards at all levels of institutional activity. A wide range of activities – including surveys, peer reviews, self-assessments, and cross-evaluations – are regularly conducted in various forms and for different purposes. However, the Academy recognizes the importance of streamlining these efforts and integrating quality assurance into all aspects of its work. This is particularly crucial in artistic education, as well as in other teaching and non-teaching processes, where planning, monitoring, and documentation contribute to both the quality of execution and ongoing improvement – which is the essence of quality itself.
To embed quality into all levels and activities of the Academy, the active participation of everyone involved in these processes is essential. The Academy continuously encourages engagement and education on quality management among all stakeholders, including the administration, the Quality Management Committee, the Student Council, students, faculty, and non-teaching staff. The goal is to establish a shared understanding, acceptance, and application of the quality system, ultimately shaping a true culture of quality within the institution.
