The Master's Degree in Documentary Directing was established in 2008, and by 2024, it has graduated around thirty students. Each year, two or three students with various film backgrounds and interests are accepted into the program.
The Documentary Directing Master’s Program admits students who have completed undergraduate studies at the Academy of Dramatic Art (Theatre Directing, Radio, Dramaturgy, Cinematography, Acting), those who studied at other arts academies, as well as students from diverse fields such as journalism, history, cultural studies, anthropology, sociology, communication, architecture, international relations, veterinary medicine, ecology, law, design, and others. The diversity of their academic backgrounds and acquired knowledge highlights the broad scope of topics covered by the Documentary Directing program.
During the two-year program, students, guided by the expertise of their professors, work on directorial exercises in the form of short films, develop their own authorial projects through screenwriting and production planning, and attend theoretical courses of their choice.
Students' exercises often evolve into independent, author-driven films, many of which have the opportunity to be showcased at film festivals and on television. However, it is important to emphasize that the primary goal of the program is not simply the production of films, but rather to provide students with an opportunity to grow their competencies, skills, experiences, knowledge, and self-confidence.
The Master's level of study develops a deep understanding in students, enabling them to create new values (innovation, creativity) as well as develop relevant skills and attitudes. The program is designed to offer an individualized approach to each student, allowing their authorial sensibilities and personal interests to be nurtured, while also fostering a collaborative and creative team atmosphere.
The core and recommended courses are taught by renowned professors such as Goran Dević, Igor Bezinović, Tonći Gaćina, Vanja Jambrović, Silvestar Kolbas, Srđan Kovačević, Eva Kraljević, Nebojša Slijepčević, and Nenad Puhovski (a retired professor who helped establish the program). These professors are actively engaged in documentary filmmaking in various aspects, such as directing, cinematography, production, and screenwriting, allowing the teaching process to draw on their creative experiences.
Upon completion of the Master’s program, students earn the title of Master of Film and TV Directing.
It is important to note that in Croatia, it is currently challenging to work exclusively as a documentary film director. As a result, most professionals in this field pursue complementary activities in the documentary sector. Some dedicate themselves to education, others work in television or production companies, at film festivals, in reality shows, commercials, and in organizing and leading film workshops.
The program provides a motivating, creative, and supportive learning environment, encouraging active participation, personal responsibility for one’s work and progress, and the acquisition of competencies that meet the demands of the industry. This system contributes to students' satisfaction with their studies and increases motivation for further work.
