There are numerous fields where highly educated and creative editors are needed, such as in film and the ever-expanding television/video production, dynamic visual design in the contemporary media environment, and computer multimedia editing. It is precisely due to the awareness of editing as a key creative element and a powerful expressive tool in all these areas that there is a need for further university-level education. The Master's degree in Editing relies on contemporary theoretical, aesthetic, and creative insights into film, film production, and the production of other audiovisual works, making it a unique study program in Croatia.
With the Bologna reform in 2005, the Master’s degree in Editing was launched, which is divided into two specializations: Editing and Sound Design. The program is based on the understanding that the construction of a film through editing is one of the essential creative aspects of film making (the production of the film and its experiential effect). It allows students to acquire highly developed skills, imagination, and knowledge. Knowledge is connected to practical work on complex editing projects in the areas of fiction and documentary film as well as commissioned forms.
The Master's degree in Editing focuses on editing complex artistic fictional and documentary films and commissioned forms. Through core artistic courses such as Documentary Film Editing, Editing of Commissioned Forms, and Fiction Film Editing, students develop and apply practical dramaturgical knowledge and skills in narrative structuring, which are necessary for organizing complex film works through editing. Students are expected to approach editing as a methodologically organized artistic task and to practice the craft in accordance with the rules of the profession. Every semester, students work on independent editing assignments and collaborate with colleagues from other departments at the Academy of Dramatic Art on numerous projects.
The goal of the Master's degree in Editing is to educate creative yet professional practitioners who acquire knowledge and skills in editing through artistic, theoretical, and professional subjects, for film, television, and other performing arts.
The Department of Editing places great emphasis on forming and maintaining generational diversity among the teaching staff for core artistic subjects, thus enabling the continuity of transferring skills, knowledge, and experiences from contemporary post-production of films and other audiovisual works while maintaining professional standards. Faculty members and associates in the Master's degree in Editing program work as editors in the film, television, performing arts, and visual identity design fields for film and (new) media, as well as in the development of film literacy.
Upon completion of the Master's degree in Editing, students are awarded the title Master of Editing (mag. art. editing) and gain an understanding of the specialized breadth of the entire film field, as well as the fundamental principles that guide both the production and reception of films. Students also gain an understanding of the vast creative and imaginative field that both filmmakers and viewers encounter.
Graduates possess the knowledge and skills to edit structurally complex fictional forms, complex documentary forms, more demanding advertisements, film trailers, music videos, sound design, visual design, and multimedia project involvement. Upon completion of the program, graduates are qualified for professional work as editor, sound designer, visual identity designer for film and TV images (compositing and effects), and visual identity designer in multimedia works.
The success of the Editing program is evident in the fact that ninety percent of graduates find employment in their field. Graduates work in film, television, culture, education, marketing, archiving, and more. Those who have moved abroad have successfully secured jobs in their profession, achieving notable results in cities like London, Amsterdam, Los Angeles, and New York.
Since the enrollment of the first generation of students in 2008, the students of the Master's degree in Editing have successfully established themselves in a wide range of editing-related professions. They apply their knowledge, skills, expertise, and creativity in their professional lives, which is confirmed by the awards they receive at numerous film events and festivals.
