The Master's degree in Cinematography, lasting two years, was created with the introduction of the Bologna process into higher education in the Republic of Croatia. The new curriculum has been enriched with various contents that align with the reformed organizational structure of higher education. Within this study program, three distinct specializations have been developed: Film and Video Cinematography, Photography, and Lighting Design.
The program is open to applicants who have completed undergraduate studies at the Academy of Dramatic Art, as well as at other institutions, such as the Academy of Fine Arts, the Academy of Arts, the Faculty of Architecture, the Design Department at the Faculty of Architecture, the Faculty of Graphic Arts, Political Science (journalism studies), and other related fields. For these applicants, there is the possibility of creating an individual study program.
The Film and Video Cinematography specialization continues from the basic three-year program in Cinematography, with an emphasis on expanding the artistic aspect of film cinematography. During the first year, students focus on the study of documentary film, while the second year is dedicated to fictional film. This approach allows students to gain a broader perspective on film production, considering not only the technical tools of cinematographers but also exploring themes, qualities, and communicative techniques in cinematic imagery.
In 2010, the Master's degree in Photography was established. While photography was a part of the undergraduate program in Cinematography, in the master's program, it is specialized as an independent artistic practice. Through various courses, photography is contextualized through the history of visual arts, aesthetic theories, and different approaches to artistic practices.
The Photography Department faculty — Associate Prof. Jelena Blagović, Full Prof. Darije Petković, Assistant Prof. Bojan Mrđenović, and Assistant Prof. Davor Konjikušić — develop intensive international and inter-institutional activities.
In December 2017, the f8 Gallery was opened, a public exhibition space of the Academy of Dramatic Art, located near the main building. The gallery was established with the aim of presenting student works, bringing the medium of photography closer to the public, and exploring the relationship between student artists and the interested public.
Upon completion of the Master's degree in Cinematography, students receive the academic title of Master of Cinematography (mag. art.). They possess knowledge, skills, and artistic competence in the fields of photography, film and electronic photography, and lighting design. Students will develop their competencies not only in the artistic and professional fields of film, television, photography, and lighting design but also in broader areas of visual design and participation in multimedia projects.
